As industries around the world continue to burn fossil fuels and emit greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, scientists fear that the rising ocean temperatures we are currently witnessing may signify the beginning of a concerning trend in ocean warming. If this trend continues, we will continue to see an increase in extreme weather events such as heat waves (terrestrial and marine), droughts, floods, extreme winds, and wildfires.

New technologies can and are contributing to a growing blue economy. However, in order for the blue economy to remain economically and environmentally sustainable, it needs to be carefully monitored to prevent marine resources from being overexploited or negatively impacted by human activities. Scientific data can play an important role in providing critical insights for ensuring the blue economy is managed sustainably.

Transition forum 2023 : Time for Solutions

As investors start to acknowledge the role the oceans play in climate change, this is likely to start attracting interest from existing climate investors.

Blue carbon is the term used to describe carbon dioxide that is captured by plants and algae, marine organisms and biochemical process that occur in the world's ocean and coastal ecosystems.

A powerful satellite was launched into orbit in December 2022 by NASA. It will measure the depth of both freshwater and ocean systems and monitor how these change over time, to provide key information with regards to the role the ocean plays in climate change and how communities can become more resilient to natural disasters such as droughts and floods.

Ocean-based economic activities are typically financed by public and private investors who can hold significant influence with regard to transitioning to a more sustainable blue economy by channeling their investments into projects that are more sustainable and less damaging to the environment. This not only supports marine biodiversity and environmental integrity, but ensures social and economic benefits derived from the ocean are secured for current and future generations to enjoy.

Populations around the world are increasingly beginning to suffer the effects of climate change, driven by carbon emissions resulting from the burning of fossil fuels. Atmospheric CO2 levels are 50% higher than they were before the start of the industrial revolution. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that traps heat in the atmosphere, thereby warming the planet. More than 90% of this trapped heat is absorbed by the oceans, which has helped to slow the rate of planet warming. But this heat hasn't magically disappeared, it has simply been transferred to the oceans, which are now becoming significantly warmer and more acidic as a result of rising atmospheric CO2 levels.

UN member states gathered in New York from the 15th-26th of August 2022 for an intergovernmental conference where delegates were tasked with drafting the first-ever Oceans Treaty on Biodiversity.

The Blue Economy is the new buzzword in sustainability circles. Much like the green economy, circular economy or sustainable financing, which strive for environmentally-responsible production and consumption of goods, the Blue Economy promotes sustainable production and consumption by taking a leaf out of nature's book.

The world's oceans are facing multiple challenges from issues such as microplastics and climate change to overexploitation of resources, which not only threatens marine biodiversity and ocean health, but also the health of the entire planet.

With climate change causing ocean temperatures to rise, and ice sheets and glaciers to melt, the impacts on the ocean are becoming more apparent. These changes and impacts not only pose a threat to coastal communities, but could drastically change marine ecosystems, and therefore need to be monitored.

The world's oceans have historically played an important role in supporting human development, and continue to do so. Yet, the blue economy still hasn't reached its true potential, and with careful planning, offers an opportunity for sustainable economic growth in the future.

Habit loss and marine pollution can both have a devastating effect on marine biodiversity. To maintain a healthy ocean it is imperative that ecosystems remain viable and pollution is addressed. Below are some solutions to help us achieve that.
